Victim behavior: what is it?

Victim behavior is a term from criminology, it originates from the English word victim - victim. Thus, speaking of victimization behavior, we mean the victim’s course of action. A victim is a person who suffered as a result of illegal actions (insults, violence, assault, murder, etc.).

Scientists say that some of the victims can provoke the offender to commit aggressive actions by their behavior or appearance. Let's try to figure out what exactly is the behavior of the victim.

Three types of behavior
How to behave correctly?
Psychologist's comment

Scientists divide this kind of behavior into three types:

  • Weakness of character, isolation, inability to respond to an insult is a weak victim.
  • Aggressive, defiant behavior that attracts attention and provokes responses.
  • Inattention, "soaring in the clouds", a weak instinct of self-preservation, which make people easy prey.

Consider the features of each of these types.

Weak sacrifice

Since childhood, such people feel persecuted by others: they are often beaten in kindergarten, they are offended at school, few people notice their work, because in their entire life they have learned not to attract too much attention. The softness of character does not allow them to fully respond to insults or attacks.

Another characteristic of this kind of behavior for people prone to panic. In any more or less difficult situation, they begin to worry very much, which makes it impossible for them to respond adequately. At such times, they cannot protect themselves from the attacker, because fear paralyzes them, forcing them to obey.

If a maniac or rapist notices such a quiet, inconspicuous victim, he identifies her as easy prey, with which he will have no problems.

Defiant victim

This category of more powerful people who love attention. It is likely that at an early age they were rather gray personalities who, over time, increasingly needed someone to look at them.

This desire can manifest itself in aggressive behavior, in the pursuit of leadership through the use of force or impartial actions. In women, this tendency is often manifested in bright, causing make-up, too sexy clothes.

The actions of this defiant victim are characterized by aggressive attacks, insults, which strongly provoke an attack.

Scattered victim

A person who, while he is on the street, is listening to loud music is an ideal victim, because he will not be able to notice the danger in time and to be on his guard.

The same can be said about thoughtful people or those who have fallen into a difficult situation and all the time thinking about ways to solve it, not paying attention to what is happening around.

Dispersed people are easily identified in the crowd, and the attacker will be sufficient to take advantage of the effect of surprise, to win over the inattentive victim.

How to behave properly, so as not to look like a victim

Considered behavior provoked many criminals to choose their victim. When a criminal does not have a clear goal, he pays attention to people's behavior.

According to forensic research, victims of unintentional attacks are usually people who are different from the general mass and have the following characteristics:

  • running glance, fussiness, nervous tension;
  • slouching back, uncertain walk, gaze to the floor;
  • bright, provocative outfit;
  • absent-mindedness, empty stare.

In order not to attract the attention of the attacker, you must stay confident. The gait should be strong, the look is directed forward, on the faces of the oncoming passers-by. But at the same time one cannot look long in the eyes of a stranger - this is a sign of internal aggression.

In addition, you must learn to control your fear, or rather its manifestation. If you are committed against any aggressive actions, do not panic - strong emotions will make you vulnerable. It is necessary to make every effort to attract the attention of others and protect themselves from the attacker. Ideally, all women should have at least a basic knowledge of self-defense techniques, this will make them more self-confident.

When you are out of your home, you need to fully control the situation within a radius of 2-3 meters, so wearing headphones with music is not recommended. Try not to go deep into your thoughts in order to feel the danger in time and take action if necessary.

Do not trust strangers. Modern criminals are like decent citizens, they have families and children, good work.

Be careful - only this quality can protect you from an accidental attack. In your power to give the impression of a strong man who can stand up for himself.
