What are skills? How to define and develop them?

About the skills we hear often. But does this mean that we understand what is being said? What are skills? How to determine whether we have them? How common is this concept? In which types of activities do skills appear? How long can this process be? Can I develop my skills? What does that require? Let's start developing skills together.

What are skills?

Skills are skills brought to automatism through repetition and practice. This is an adaptive mechanism that helps to adapt to the implementation of certain activities that are significant for a person. That is, each profession has its own necessary skills, which are developed by a person after months of training. The builders alone, the military others, and the third the athletes.

They help to increase the speed and quality of work, thereby increasing its productivity. For example, an inexperienced breeder in one day will clear the field several times less than experienced one. When his skills increase, he will do more work in the same time, cope with the task faster. Why should he? If he has an account in rubles, not days, then the more he does, the more he will earn.

Skill classification

It is customary to single out four basic skill groups:

  • Mental;
  • Motor;
  • Perceptual;
  • Behavioral.

Thoughtful help in the mental work of man. They are associated with the perception and reproduction of information, its analysis, distribution and systematization. For example, more experienced lawyers or investigators find the necessary information much faster.

Motive will be useful in any work related to interaction with the outside world. This is not only hard physical activity. For example, medical laboratory tests often require workers to be able to work with a micropipette, which allows metered to disperse droplets of liquid into test tubes. It should be understood how much effort to apply to the pipette, otherwise you can add more solution than necessary, violating the purity of the experiment. Even more sophisticated work is inherent in jewelers, dentists, etc.

Perceptual (sensory) skills consist in the human perception of the surrounding world, in the ability to use his receptors. For example, to guess the familiar sounds, smells or touches. Tasters, sommeliers, musicians and others will not do without perceptual skills.

Behavioral skills - This is a tribute to society. Since a person lives among other people, he needs to learn how to behave correctly. This skill helps to feel more confident in the company, to quickly find a pair, and also to work in the service sector.

With the classification of skills figured out, we now turn to the possibility of their identification and identification.

How to define skills?

Since skills are not innate talents, but skills that are developed only in the process of practice, they should be sought where there is the most experience. If someone is engaged in swimming, then he has developed the skill of movement in water. Another dances, respectively, his skills are concluded in the coordination of movements and sense of rhythm. The third works as a waiter, so his skills are related to communication.

It is more difficult to determine the presence of skills in another person.. No less difficult to hide their own, especially when it comes to motor skills, because they are brought to automatism. For example, a boxer, in the event of a conflict, will automatically take a position that is advantageous for striking or blocking the counter.

According to ancient Japanese legends, an example is known when, due to their skills, a group of ninja saboteurs came across. They dressed as peasants, easily deceiving the city guards, but when they were moving along the market square, by the will of fate, they exposed themselves. She got off the cart with the horses, rushing towards them. Well-trained ninja jumped over this obstacle, posing as themselves.

Skill formation

Skill development is a long process. Conventionally, there are four stages in the way of their formation:

  • Preliminary - associated with the first attempts and, accordingly, an overabundance of information;
  • Analytical - during it, a person analyzes and tries to understand how best to accomplish what is required of him;
  • Synthetic - characterized by the combination of theory and practice;
  • Auto - a person brings his skill to perfection, without paying much attention to his performance.

These stages suggest how to build skills development. First of all, you need to try, setting yourself up for the upcoming work. For example, someone wants to learn how to hit hard. Immediately begins to thresh pear as it will. There is his acquaintance with this sports equipment. Next, he watches themed videos, reads books, perhaps takes a couple of workouts from an experienced boxer. In the process, he analyzes his actions and compares them with the information received.

A synthesis of theory and practical skills occurs in the head of this person. He tries to beat the pear correctly, starting the movement from the foot, twisting the pelvis, correctly guiding the fist on the target. Gradually develop the necessary skill. He is no longer difficult to perform a technically correct blow, without even thinking about it. This is the skill brought to automatism.

Motivation is necessary for a person to think about the development of a skill.. Very often, the external stimulus becomes a motivating factor, for example, a high school student, because of which our hero decided to learn how to hit hard.

Skills are the fruits of practice and numerous repetitions of the same actions. They appear in response to an external stimulus, or a person’s inner aspiration. It’s not right to think that skills develop quickly. From the beginning of practice to the advent of automatism, it may take more than one month or even a year. But it's worth it, because any skill in the chosen type of activity allows you to achieve better results in a shorter period of time. And this is a high productivity of work, in conjunction with a substantial saving of effort and energy.
