How not to work at work: 5 life hacking

This article is called "How not to work at work". I will talk here about this, as well as how to find a job that does not have to work hard. But, have patience, first I will write, why all this is necessary.

Many people desperately want to change their occupation and lifestyle. Some look with hope at the prospect of starting their own business. Others want to organize a remote income in order not to be tied to one place and work, for example, within walking distance of huge tropical beaches. Still others just want to change their profession.

Many people are simply not satisfied with the daily office work and want to change something, but they don’t know how. After all, for the development of your project you need time and free money, those things that everyone does not have. And it's not just that people are afraid of change. And how they are drawn for them in their mind.

Fear of change

Some people think that these changes should be preceded by global preparation, careful planning and a lot of time and money. It seems to them that they had only one attempt in their lives, but they spent it, and for them the train had already left. Their work does not give them a chance to do something of their own, since the latter will require those resources that a person does not have. After all, it will be necessary to do some business closely, seriously, to invest in full and bear great risks, and for this there is no possibility, because you need to feed the family. “It was necessary to think earlier,” they sum up.

To others it seems that change comes suddenly, like a storm in the tropics. To change your life completely, give up all that was and move forward towards the unknown. For example, to leave in the middle of the working day, waving goodbye to the surprised authorities and colleagues with a one-way ticket to some warm country. Someone this unknown scares, and someone dares to rush there, but sometimes fails due to the lack of a springboard for the implementation of their plans.

But my way here, to India, where I work remotely, lay between two extremes. I did not see the need to immediately do some kind of "serious" project, to attract investment and quit my main job. At the same time, I did not want to jump into the unknown.

My life changes began gradually. They began to be realized not immediately under the tropical Sun, but within the walls of the Moscow office in which I worked. Since the work was not much of a large part of the working time, I sat there senselessly: I watched movies, read comic websites, corresponded with friends. The novelties of the film industry were posted on the corporate server, and it seemed that the leadership itself encouraged this kind of “activity”.

But then I realized that I did not want to work all my life like this! We need some changes! But what to do? Should I have to quit, since I have so much free time at work? Maybe I should use it for business.

Your employer is your investor.

Indeed, starting a business requires investment. But investments are not only funds for hiring employees, using services of third parties. Investment is also time. Even if you are working alone, you need to eat something and live somewhere while your business does not bring any financial return. On this, too, need to seek funds.

But why look for some investor, to be in his debt, when your employer may be an investor of your business? (Of course, if the initial costs are small). You can safely work in your office on your project, where there is free internet, tea and coffee. A salary will provide you with food and shelter for the time while you do it!

It happened to me. I began to implement my website and related projects while I was working in the office. And I did this in the office, no less than three years! At first, I simply “searched for myself”, read about different types of business, including online. There was even a plan to become a professional poker player! My goal was not just to find another way to earn money, but to radically change my life and what I do. The prospect of retiring to write tablets in Excel or writing technical tasks for computer programs was not very bright.

Something is missing here

Only then came the idea to make a website about self-development. Inspired me on this study of the site of Steve Pavlin. And I was inspired not only by his experience of creating such a popular English-language resource, but also by the fact that when I read the articles, I already thought: "Yes, that’s all true, but something is missing here, something very important." With the same thought, I read sites of other subjects.

Now, I understand that many human undertakings came from the thought: "something is missing here ..."

Self-development and meditation were what the "soul" really was about, what I wanted to do. And I just wanted to see what came of it. Even if there is no substantial income, this experience will still be useful, not only for me, but also for people who read me. We had to start somewhere.

And now it took me a while to learn how to make websites, how to fill and optimize them, etc. etc.

And the nature of my work in the office provided me with an excellent base for fulfilling my dream.

I often read about how smart young people drop out of college, because labor prospects in their specialty scare them. But even if you are disgusted with the upcoming office work, it is still better to graduate from the institute. And make your work a base for your new and daring undertakings. So you protect yourself from many problems.

(Despite the fact that I don’t like office work, I understand that she can teach a lot. And the office is different, of course. Such work is not always unbearable. It all depends on place, team and other factors.)

But for your employer to serve as an investor for your new projects, one important condition must be met. All working hours should not be occupied by work. If you do nothing at work for more than 30 to 50 percent of the time, then this is already very good.

How to find such a job? This will be discussed in this article.

How to find a job that does not need to work?

If you already have such a job, and you want to change your life, then stop wasting time! Look for new perspectives and opportunities! Recommendations on this subject I will give in this article.

I wrote such a long introduction in order to make it clear why you should not work at work. Not for sitting down pants and laziness, but for new changes and prospects!

Tips that I will publish, rely only on my own experience of finding work and, accordingly, work in an organization where a lot of work was not necessary. And this experience is certainly not comprehensive. Therefore, I will be glad to read your comments and observations regarding this topic in the comments. Your experience can be very useful for someone! I do not think that such a topic is widely discussed anywhere.

So, it is better to find out about the possible amount of labor before hiring.

Interview

It is clear that the question: “will you have to work a lot, or else I want to do something else at the same time” you shouldn’t ask at the interview. But you can find out indirectly.

The obvious is that the questions: "how do you feel about the processing," "do you do well with the work in the conditions of trawling?" indicate that most likely will have to work.

In some companies, all over the place and recycling are the norm. Take a closer look at the atmosphere inside the office: the tense look of people (and the HR-ra who interviews you), general haste and bustle, incessant slamming of doors should alert you.

And the relaxed conversations of employees about distracted things, smiles, silence, calmness and unhurriedness are good signs. It was this atmosphere that reigned in my last job, where I spent most of my time creating and maintaining my websites, publishing materials.

Company

As for the company, then, according to my personal observations, most of the work in large Western corporations. Man is also considered as a resource in them. And if this resource is "idle", it means that it is used inefficiently. And with efficiency in Western firms, everything is fine.

Therefore, you do not need to look for too "effective" office. But also one should not find a very neglected company. It is clear that in very small companies there can be a lot of work, as there are few workers.

A firm must feel confident in the market that it will say that it has enough money to support a large staff, pay all of them a salary, and not charge a lot of work to a small number of people.

Also, the company should not be Japanese / Korean. In such firms they love to work without a break for 12 hours a day.

Position

As for the position, analytical and creative professions probably play better here. Where there is no constant "download" and there are strategic, not current tasks. Given a certain time for their implementation, which you dispose of at its discretion. Although, it seems to me, this is not a strict rule. There are people of these professions who have so much work that they don’t have time to complete it even in an eight-hour working day. Probably, everything depends more on the organization of work, on the total number of tasks and on how much they want to load you.

All of these items may indirectly provide information on the amount of work. But this is not always possible to determine before you, in fact, embarked on it. But you have a trial period. And remember, this period is given not only for the employer to look at you, but also for you to evaluate the employer.

Probation

First day

Much can already be understood on the first day.

Bad sign: you are in a hurry to strain the work. Your boss is constantly rushing a technical service employee to finally set up a computer and network for you.

Good sign: the first days pass in a relaxed way. They don’t rush to give work, they just gently introduce them. Or they give you some kind of easy task to somehow take you up, for example, to study corporate documents. I was always a little funny when my superiors in a new place tried to confuse me with something, only, as it seemed to me, because of fear that I would be bored.

If in the first days at the new workplace you are sitting almost completely left to yourself, then this is very good! Also on the first day you can look at the atmosphere in the team and how the situation with the Internet is. It is also a very good indicator of the amount of work.

the Internet

Bad sign: many sites on the Internet are blocked. Even worse, if everything is closed and there is no Skype and AISi. Since an employee does not have the fair right to read news or buy goods on the Internet in his spare time, there is no free time. So don't wait for mercy!

Good sign: only VKontakte, classmates and all kinds of torrents are blocked. The rest is open. It is even better if a corporate channel with movies and music is open for employees. ICQ and Skype are put on the computer without any problems. Or they are already installed. You can already rejoice if you got into such an organization.

But do not quit the same from work, if there is no Internet, and give a lot to do? And if there is very well paid? Do not lose heart! All is not lost! The problem with the Internet can be solved by installing the Thor client. And there are a couple of ways to reduce the amount of work, which I will discuss.

How not to work at work

Life hacking 1: Set your pace

Have you been given a task on probation? If you see that it is not urgent, then do not rush to "hand over" as soon as you have finished. Pull a little more time, but not overly, and only then demonstrate the work done to the authorities. What for? To show what your pace of performing tasks. Different people do work at different speeds, and this is normal within acceptable limits. You need to show that you are not super fast. Not only so that you are not in a hurry to perplex with something new. And to demonstrate that you are busy with something all the time, and do not sit and miss, having done the work.

And then you can take advantage of this and leave some of the time spent in the office for your personal affairs.

Life hacking 2: Plan your work and your business

The question of the series “how to work less and have more time” requires a separate article, so I will not discuss this topic in detail here. But you have to remember that good planning of your affairs will allow you to do more, both in work and in your projects. Start your day with the most important, and leave minor tasks for later. Set yourself goals and deadlines for which you must fulfill these goals.

Life hacking 3: Synchronize

If it is possible to come earlier and leave later, you can get to the workplace before your boss. And you will have a time when no one will distract and control you. Also I do not recommend going to dinner with everyone every day. If there is such an opportunity, choose another time for meals. While everyone is at dinner, you can safely go about your business.

Life hacking 4: Do business

As I wrote above, I do not urge you to free up the amount of working time to suffer nonsense. And you will be engaged in business, there will be no need to depict "a stormy work activity." Graphs, formulas, program code on your monitor look much more solid than funny pictures or videos, even if they do not relate to your work. So do the work, even if the job is not what you are paid for.

Laghak 5: Mask

It will be cool if your third-party project is similar to what you do at work. For example, you are a Java programmer, but decided to make your website in PHP. I think if you are programming a site at work, not every person will notice that you are doing a third-party business using a different programming language.

Important!

The purpose of this article is to help people change their occupation and lifestyle, without risking everything at once, and not a guide to parasitism. Many probably already put an end to their dreams, thinking that their business can not be combined with hired work. Far from it. I do not call to destroy and break the wall that separates you from your dream. You can filter through the stones drop by drop.

I also do not call to treat my work irresponsibly and not to perform the tasks that you are given. Take the initiative, work, just leave some time for the implementation of your personal projects. People work in offices 40 hours a week at least (this is not counting lunch, travel time, possible processing). As a result of such many hours of labor, not only time is consumed, but also the forces that you could devote to something else. It would be quite fair to devote at least 5 or 10 hours out of these 40 as to the realization of your personal plans for the transformation of life. It will be much more useful for you than watching movies or spending time on entertainment sites.

At the same time, I understand that such work is not available for everyone. Someone has to really work hard to provide for his family, and there is not enough time left for something else. I know it. Therefore, this article does not claim to universality. I just hope that someone who has the opportunity to find a more “free job” will find it useful.

But I did not answer the main question. What to do, if not work, sitting in the office? But this is also a topic for a separate article. Give only one piece of advice. In the beginning it may seem that the way of life and work that you lead has no alternatives. But this is only at first glance. It's rare when ideas come right away. You need to spend time on studying the situation, possible work options, sort through as many of them as possible, learn about the latest market trends, talk to people who have started their own business. In this case, not necessarily your project will require significant investments. Everything comes gradually. First, you decided to leave the office and teach languages on Skype, and then after a couple of years you open your own company, which is dedicated to learning languages. Everything is possible!

Of course, it is not necessary to devote time to your business. Leisure time at work, you can simply spend sensibly
.
For example, to improve in the framework of their current specialty, or simply to engage in self-development, learning and creativity. All in your hands!
