Anti-HR: Is it possible to lie on an interview? How to do it right

In order not to torment your expectation, I will say straight away that it is possible to lie at the interview, but not about everything, if you want to get a good job and decent compensation! Only this requires some training and experience. About in what points you can lie, and in what should not be, will be discussed further. I will also give some tips on how to correctly hide a lie.

First, I touched on this issue in the main article from the Anti-HR cycle How to successfully pass an interview for work. But then I thought that there I had not paid him enough attention, although he certainly demanded it and therefore decided to devote the question to “is it possible to lie on the interview»A separate article.

In many articles on this topic that I saw on the net, it is written that in no case should you cheat at the interview: either they will hunt you right away, or a lie will be revealed later and then you will not have problems. What nonsense! If you competently do everything and understand what you can tell a lie, and about what you can not (how to do this, I will tell further), then no one will understand anything. There is nothing surprising that in these articles they are trying to intimidate you, because they are written, most often, by HR themselves and of course they do not want to be led by the nose, so they give you such “advice”.

To lie on an interview is good or bad?

Before proceeding to the practical recommendations, let me touch on the ethical side, what I will discuss in this article. To lie to the interview, is it good or bad? The moral choice is a personal matter for everyone, but for me personally there are no problems with this. I do not consider lying on the interview something very immoral.

Sometimes you can not do without cheating

First, many employers expect you to work “for the idea,” the motivation to work in the company that they represent, they expect flattery from you, directed at the organization. You must admit that it is difficult to be absolutely sincere here. Not every one of us is a true workaholic and a fan of corporations, ready to work hard at work, only for the love of the company. We are not all closed on the thirst for career and professional development, for someone it’s more important just to earn money and provide for your family.

A large number of employers will refuse to hire you if you are completely honest with them. There is nothing surprising that people work, in general, for money and that many people do not care from which year the company exists and what it does they need only to ensure that the desired amount of compensation is paid and there are comfortable working conditions and the office is near the house . But, oddly enough, some companies are not ready to accept employees with such sober, sensible and natural motivation. Therefore, if HR wants to see us as an office patriot, then we will show him to him.

We see that in some aspects of the interview, it is impossible not to lie or not to immortalize or exaggerate. Otherwise, we simply will not be taken to work. Some lies have almost the nature of polite formality, for example, this refers to the on-duty answers to the on-duty questions, such as “name your shortcomings”. One can hardly be considered an honest person who answers this question, so “I am too pedantic ... I can earn so much that I don’t notice anything around”.

He does not speak directly about his weaknesses and everyone knows this, he just seems to be demonstrating his possession of the unwritten rules of the interview. He seems to show with all his appearance: “I know how to answer this question, I have read the rules of your“ game ”and accept them.”

Of course, the latter is said not quite seriously, but there is some truth in this.

Everybody lies (c)

Secondly, ethics and honesty is not an obstacle for the company that hosts you. Many of the shortcomings of HR can hide from you and frankly exaggerate the merits. You can impose the most unfavorable working conditions for you, resorting to all sorts of tricks and tricks. A “promising and developing” company, after you have settled there, may turn out to be an ordinary seedy desk, where employees are not paid their salaries on time and fined for every offense.

One time I was faced with the fact that I was deceived at the expense of salaries and silent at the expense of processing. In short, employers also tend to lie and exaggeration, so we do not have the right to fight them with the same weapon and only then it will be equal to a fight.

Desire for better working conditions

Thirdly, you deserve a good salary and suitable working conditions. Life in the existing realities cannot be called the simplest. Therefore, there is nothing bad that you are seeking the best work for yourself by such means. You need to feed yourself and your family, and companies will not lose much when they take you to a higher salary than the one you could count on if you did not lie and did not hide anything. Work is hard, it is everyday work, you deserve decent compensation for it!

Difficult to change gender without cheating

Fourthly, if you are tired of the current work and you want to change the type of activity, then it will be difficult for you to find something new without experience that would fit the area in which you now want to work. Your experience will have to be altered a little.

So, figured it out. Now I will tell about what it is usually necessary to deceive.

In answers to which questions HR should go to the hoax

Your work experience

So when you talk about your experience:

  • First of all, when you talk about your experience, focus on those functions and tasks that you want to do in a new place. No need to talk about how you made the contract, if you already have these contracts in the liver are sitting and you do not plan to do it anymore. The same applies to professional achievements; we are talking about achievements only in the area where we want to work.
  • Exaggerate your merits, do not hesitate, because it is a question of getting the desired employment. If you were a member of a project, then find out everything from your colleagues about him, and then tell me that you initiated it and accompanied the implementation of this project at each stage.
  • Attribute the achievements of your colleagues to yourself. Have you heard that someone from the staff came up with a more efficient packaging scheme at the warehouse? Find out everything from him, then at the interview say that it is you (do not forget to mention it in the resume), a colleague should not be offended. At least when my former work colleagues were looking for a new place of employment, I readily told my merit in the smallest details so that they could assign them to themselves, I advised them to do so.

You can alter your past experience at your own discretion, but you see for yourself that you cannot take it completely out of your head, you need to rely on something, perhaps even on someone else's experience, on your academic knowledge, etc.

You do not need to be afraid of the fact that you are now hanging noodles on your ears for an interview, you will be taken to work and you will not get anything, because you really do not know well what you so confidently said. Believe me, this is the last thing you should worry about. All you get. And even if not, so what? The maximum that you can do is dismiss. No need to think of it as some kind of shame: you tried it - it didn’t work out well, and God bless him - forget it.

With this all. So what else do you have to lie about at the interview? Let's go further.

Your salary at previous jobs

It is better to overstate your previous salary in order to achieve appropriate compensation in the new workplace. They say that this information can always be checked by requesting relevant documents. No, not always. I will write an article “How to achieve the highest possible salary at the interview” and I will tell you all about it in detail, so subscribe to updates in the form immediately under the article and follow the release of new articles.

Duty questions, like "who do you see yourself in 5 years" and other

It is clear that not everyone is experiencing that clarity about their future, which HRs want to see. So here again it will not be possible to be sincere, no matter how much you want it. How to answer all such questions read in my article how to answer questions at the interview.

Why did you leave your previous job?

It is better to talk about the lack of prospects for professional growth, etc., and not to talk about the fact that you were not satisfied with a small salary or had bad relations with employees. In this question, one often has to lie, what is better to say here, how to answer correctly, I described in the article about the questions at the interview, the link to which I gave in the previous paragraph.

Questions about your character

Also have to lie in all sorts of nuances. Understand that when you come to an interview, your first task is not to show how smart and good you are, but to demonstrate that you are ideally suited for this job. HR asks questions to find out. Think about this job, what kind of person is suitable for it? How would he answer these questions? If the position implies a small number of people in submission, then of course you say that you have leadership qualities.

Let you really do not know if you have such qualities or not. But in this position there are good conditions and you want to work there. Therefore, boldly say that “yes, I have such personality traits”! It is never too late to develop these qualities, try, there is nothing to worry about. This is an obvious example, but there are also questions with a more hidden meaning, think to identify which of your properties they are asking and respond accordingly.

If you decide to deceive the employer, hedge up!

This is an important point.

Actually, prepare for the fact that you will have to provide contacts of the person who will have to confirm the information you provided. It is possible for him to agree in advance that he will confirm by phone the information that you have provided for an interview with another company. If he is a sane person and you have a good relationship with him, then he will go to the meeting. Otherwise, it is better to ask anyway: an attempt is not torture.

If you can’t ask this boss, forgive your colleague, say that he was your unofficial manager. Suppose you have the same position, you are in the same horizontal of submission, but still, informally he is your mentor, you are a manager, and he is a senior manager, for example. I already wrote about this in another article from the Anti-HR cycle, I will not dwell on this anymore.

Can your bluff reveal?

So we figured out so is it possible to lie on the interview. I have listed the main types of questions, answering which, it is sometimes necessary to go for a trick. Everywhere they say "do not lie on the interviews, the lies will then come up and you will have problems." What can emerge from this (if only the previous salary, but, I will write in a separate article how to make it not appear). And even if it comes up?

The fact that this is terrible, you have already taken a job and are unlikely to be dismissed if they find out that your experience does not quite match the way you described it. The rest is all personal questions, they relate to your qualities and motivation, how can you verify sincerely you spoke about your strengths or lied? It can not be checked.

Do not be afraid, be confident, nothing will be revealed, and you will get the job you were looking for. But it is not enough to know in what aspects of the interview you can go on bluffing, you also need to be able to bluff correctly. how how to lie on an interview I will tell you further.

How to lie on the interview. Fundamentals of Bluff Theory

As a poker lover, I’ll give an example from this game, which in my opinion can ideally suit here. What is poker bluff? Bluffing is cheating in order to earn more gaming chips. This is an attempt to show your opponent that you have collected a stronger combination than he (he doesn’t see your cards) and force him to fold the cards that actually beat yours and get his chips. Those who are not familiar with poker believe that a successful bluff is characterized by an imperturbable facial expression and stillness of facial expressions on the one hand and the ability to unravel it on all hidden body movements on the other.

This is not entirely true. A bad bluff can be noticed even when you play on the Internet and do not see the face of your opponent. Newbies bluff mindlessly and often their bluff is opened, because inept bluff is in violation of the logic of betting! If you want your opponent to believe that you have a strong combination, then you must portray it to the end, make at each step of trading such bets that you would have if you really had a winning combination. Half-hearted decisions will not work here: you need to think over everything in advance, decide what you will do at the next betting course, and at the last? Take into account all “ifs”, all possible moves of the opponent and decide that when you continue your bluff and when you give up.

Be consistent!

Also your answers at the job interview. The entire presentation must be internally consistent! It should not be violations of logic. HRs are well aware of this and are trying to build questions so that these contradictions surface, if any. For example, if at the beginning of the interview you say that you left your previous job because you did not have enough career prospects, you should not at the end of the interview answer the question “what do you expect from a new job”, answer: “I’m waiting for more money and in general, I like the fact that she is close to home. ” No, you have already said about professional perspectives and should say about them again, so as not to contradict.

An example is rough, simple, questions can be more cunning, but the principle, I think, should be clear. Do not contradict yourself, bluff wisely, think over the bluff in advance and then HR will not be left to believe in it!

Think over your presentation in advance. Avoid common phrases

Consider your answers to all possible HR questions. If you say that you were engaged in some functions at the previous work, and in fact, you did not do it, then I recommend to prepare. General phrases will not pass here, it will not be enough to say “I was engaged in pricing”, since you will be “probed” and seek for specificity. Maybe you have someone from your friends or former colleagues engaged in pricing, find out everything from him to the smallest detail, if you do not know. It is in the details and nuances will need to be the most accurate.

Do not try to memorize it, you have to understand what this functionality consists of, then it will become much easier for you to answer the questions, you can improvise on the fly.

It may seem that all this is so difficult, to come up with such a legend, although in fact it is not. At HR, the same general ideas about the functions supposedly performed by you earlier, like yours, and even much worse. You should be as specific as possible about what you did and what you did, but you don’t have to know the whole subject area of your duties. Limit yourself to your imaginary specifics, say "I did a), b), and c) I didn’t do it, so I don’t know, others did."

Of course, in advance to take into account all possible questions is simply not possible, all this will come with experience.

Do not be afraid to seem implausible.

I have already said here that HR wants to see in you a desire to work for an idea, and not for money. In his opinion, you should radiate with all your being the sincere desire of selfless labor under the banners of such a wonderful company as he represents! Once he wants to see an ideological workaholic, we will show him to him.

Do not worry about the fact that the image of a disinterested corporate idealist may look unnatural. This is what is expected of you. But we do not go too far: you do not need to shout loudly, chanting the name of the company, in all respects we keep the measure.

Boldly and answer questions about personal motivation: "Why do you want to work here?", We say: "This is a well-known large company / recognizable brand / I am close to the company profile / I like what it does."

Your answers should be clear, no half-hearted, uncertain statements (if you decide to bluff, then go to the end or do not bluff at all). They must clearly demonstrate your great motivation. We are not trying to play up, somehow dodge to look more vivid and believable. No, we impose on our employer the image of a typical office patriot, even if this image is rude, primitive and artificial, he wants to see you like that. Do not be afraid, HR will “eat” and not choke.

Now I will give some tips on how to ensure that your facial expressions and intonation do not betray your bluff.

Watch your speech

It should not be any fast or slow, most importantly, make it permanent. If you started the presentation at a slow pace and answered the most ordinary questions in a measured way, tapping every word, then try not to accelerate when the questions become tricky and delicate (and vice versa do not break from accelerated speech to slow)

Good luck to you!
