Who is a workaholic and why does he need workaholism

A workaholic is a person who is ready to work around the clock, but his main goal is not to make as much money as possible, but simply to work as long as possible in time. Of course, for some employers such an employee will be a very valuable find, because in the event of which he can always be entrusted with the most difficult and sometimes uninteresting tasks, and he will always fulfill them. But the disadvantages of a workaholic is that he:

• firstly, it provokes health problems, since an intense load and lack of proper rest create stress, which already causes neuroses and heart problems;

• secondly, it deprives itself of the opportunity to adjust its personal life.

Causes of workaholism

Many believe that workaholism is a positive trait of character, similar to hard work. But these concepts should not be confused, since diligence is the ability of a person to perform a particular job, ultimately pursuing a specific goal (to save money for rest, buy an apartment, move up the career ladder). And workaholism is the aimless accomplishment of work, that is, the workaholic does not set himself any goal, and he works only for the sake of the work process itself. He does not even care what he gets for these works, as long as he is provided with work.

In other words, workaholism is a psychological dependence on work, that is, roughly speaking, a disease. And the reason for it is simple: a person simply tries to run away from real life, completely immersed in work, and most likely, complexes, awareness of personal inconsistency, or difficult life situations that caused the workaholic to completely change his outlook are to blame.

Agree that when personal problems arise, in order not to fall into depression because of them or to save yourself from unnecessary nerves, many advise you to fully immerse yourself in your work. This is exactly what workaholics do: they are afraid to return home, as parents do not reckon with their opinion, they say who needs to communicate, they learn how to live correctly, or spouses also often arrange scenes of jealousy, provoke everyday quarrels and try to control your every move . And the only right decision in this situation is to avoid all this, that is, complete immersion in work, is not it? But, unfortunately, this way will affect your life even more negatively, since psychological illness will not lead to anything good.

But the saddest thing is that the workaholic does not understand that he is ill, therefore, it will be very difficult for him to cope with this problem. After all, even to take alcoholism as an example: alcoholics know that the society and close people do not approve of their addiction, and on a subconscious level they begin to understand that it is time to deal with this problem. And workaholics, on the contrary, see that their behavior is approved by society, and the fleeting praise of superiors or work colleagues further reinforce workaholism in them.

Tackling the problem

Since workaholism is a psychological disease, it is pointless to hope that this problem will disappear by itself. Often, workaholics need the help of specialists, which includes:

• psychotherapy;

• drug therapy;

• sports activities.

But the main thing is that the workaholic himself realizes his illness, otherwise it will be impossible for him to break out of this disease, since with his self-suggestion he will prove to himself that workaholism is good.

So, if you have noticed an excessive love of work, then the first thing you need to do is reduce its volume. But, unfortunately, this is not always possible, for example, if an entrepreneur deliberately reduces his responsibilities, this could threaten him with the collapse of his business. And if you often shift additional responsibilities to yourself, trying to help colleagues or simply wanting to immediately do something that could be done later, then from now on it is not worth it.

Of course, if you give up part of the work, you will provide yourself with free time, which you should fill with a new kind of activity that is not related to the usual work. Allow yourself to relax: take a trip with friends to nature, visit various excursions, go in for sports, in general, do whatever you want, but just don’t do any work. And, of course, follow the labor code: work according to the established standards and go on vacation regularly.

And do not forget that love for work is, of course, good, but the main thing is not to cross the line from hard work to workaholism. Therefore, if you lose interest in life, and are ready to sacrifice much for work, then think: perhaps this is a consequence of a psychological illness with which you need to start a fight. And the sooner you understand this, the easier it will be for you to break free from the shackles of workaholism.
