Three myths about psychologists: what not to believe?

Today, no one will be surprised by such a profession as a psychologist.

But our society is still quite difficult and intense about personal consultations and purposeful work with these specialists.

This is usually associated with different myths that relate to the specialty.

Consider some of them.

Only people who are not capable of anything go to a psychologist.

In our society for many years there is an ideal of a certain "strong person" who is able to cope with everything: difficult work, problems in the family, the death of a loved one, depression, etc. We all persist in building ourselves strong, trying to meet the social ideal . But it is worth remembering: even those who outwardly cope with their difficulties ideally cause irreparable damage to themselves. Diseases, serious psychological disorders, shortened lifespan - all this is a payment for a force that does not exist in nature.

We all need help from time to time, and the real power is to admit it, to consult a doctor in time. A good psychologist, like a good surgeon, helps to cut off the excess, maintains your health and well-being. None of us will begin to treat a tooth on our own, fly a plane, lay wiring, and do a lot of other things that we have never learned. So why are we trying to fix the psychological problems ourselves?

In the life of a psychologist, everything must be perfect, otherwise he is not a professional.

In the view of some people, a psychologist is a person with one marriage for life, three children, a luxurious country house, and other life bonuses. But let's say this: we are talking about a living person, with the same problems as many of us. The difference in this case is one: he knows how to solve them with smaller losses and with maximum efficiency. For this, he has special tools, years of professional education and experience.

There is not a single person in the world who has no problems in any area of his life. As well as there is not a single doctor who would live his life without a single disease. The function of the psychologist is not to set you a perfect example, but to help sort out your life.

Psychologist imposes his value system on the patient.

Again, not true. If you work with a professional, you will never feel that you are talking to a person from another world. This specialist never assesses, condemns, does not try to drag you to the other side - he comes from your picture of the world and your values.

The psychologist takes into account your gender, nationality, religious beliefs, other fundamental things. This is not your teacher and opponent - this is your ally. He, like you, is interested in a favorable outcome of the case. And communicating with such a person is the best way to solve serious problems.
