Why do you need develop musical taste? I asked myself this question and for a long time did not find an answer convincing enough to devote a whole article to it.
It seemed to me that a rich musical taste is needed only in order to consider myself a more refined person than others or to surprise his interlocutors with his extensive knowledge in the field of music. These goals are certainly not worthy to devote a whole text to them.
But then I realized that the development of taste also has its own meaning. We will talk about this in this article. Also I will tell how to listen to music. And for those who are interested, I will give a short review of your favorite music at the end of the article. Perhaps this review will help you find new interesting artists and interesting music trends.
New connections
As I wrote in the first article of the cycle “how music helped me cope with depression”, when I was depressed, new and unfamiliar musical directions helped me to go beyond the old habits and learn a lot about myself. Then I began to actively listen to music that I never understood, trying to comprehend its harmony, to expand the boundaries of my taste.
But why else did I start to like music that I never liked? It happened, not only because I became calmer and eliminated the usual patterns of mental reactions. Anyway, any new music that goes beyond the boundaries of the traditions in which we were brought up and which shaped our taste, listening is hard and unusual. Just because it is really something new for us.
And I am convinced that when we begin to understand some new music for us, something in our brain is rebuilt. Before a small child begins to grasp relationships in this world, he must form new connections in thinking. At first glance, it may seem to him that there is no correlation between the fact that dad stopped going to work and the fact that mom sold his fur coat. But then, he learns new things. And at the place of the disorder a whole picture appears, woven of causes and effects.
Likewise, there is a taste for a particular piece of music: harmony and order come in place of apparent chaos. For example, earlier jazz seemed to me to be some kind of improvisational porridge. But, over time, as I became acquainted with these trends, I began to hear the logic and beauty of this music. And it became obvious to me that there were changes in my brain, new connections were formed, allowing me to see some musical meaning where I hadn’t seen it before.
Unfortunately, I can not back up this statement with any scientific references, but I think that I have not sinned against the truth. How is it not the development of new connections in the brain that causes us to begin to perceive what we could not perceive before?
This brings me to the answer to the question why develop musical taste. This is necessary in order to expand our range of emotions, to delight us with the discovery of new feelings and sensations, unfamiliar to us, to destroy the usual patterns of perception. When I began to study new musical directions for me, I felt that a whole new world of sounds was opening up for me. And for me it was a kind of challenge: will I be able to find what others have found, to hear what was unavailable to me before?
The development of musical taste enriches our inner world and a sense of beauty!
Before I talk about the development of taste, I want to warn you that this is not necessary in order to get a sense of superiority over those who are more sophisticated in music than you. The taste for exquisite music does not make you better and smarter than those who do not listen to such music. Taste is not a reason for snobbery and contempt!
About the development of taste
The development of musical taste is not a complex science, but there are still certain rules here. The beginning is fairly simple and obvious. Just take the music you never understood and start listening to it.
How to do it? It is not so difficult. The Internet is replete with ratings like “100 Best Electronic Albums” or “100 Great Works of Classical Music”, “500 Best Albums According to Rolling Stone”. (Or use the social network Last.fm, this is very convenient). First, it will make it easier to choose and searches. Secondly, there is nothing wrong in relying on the taste of critics until yours have been formed, and thirdly, it will give a chance to get acquainted with the universally recognized masterpieces of world music.
Purchase (or download) an album and take the time to listen to it.
When you listen to music, try only to listen to music, and not to do something else. I understand that many of you are used to playing musical compositions in the background, doing something else in parallel. But now try to act contrary to established habits.
Allocate an hour of time (the average album lasts on average) and devote this hour to music. Listen to the recording (album, compilation, etc.) from beginning to end, without switching to anything else. Follow the following rules, they will teach you a lot and not only in the field of perception of the art form discussed in this article.
Rules for listening to music
Rule 1 - Be patient
I assure you, listening to the end of an album will be quite difficult. It is possible that, at first, you will even like the music a little, but after a while you will get bored. And then you will begin to feel that you are wasting your time, because you could have done something else. You will want to get up and start doing something. But take your time, let the album play to the end. You do not waste time, you relax and relax. You can set aside at least one hour per week for this activity.
This will teach you patience, concentration and relieve stress.
Rule 2 - get rid of expectations
Sometimes it seems to us that a particular piece of musical art should bring certain sensations. For example, we expect that calm, smooth, enveloping music will begin to give birth to pictures of the cosmos in us, and a classical work will awaken images of antiquity in our imagination. Sometimes we will just wait for certain emotions, since our mind connects them with music.
But try to accept what is, and not to compare your feelings with what should be. Your emotions and feelings are what they are at a given time. The word "must" does not apply to them at all.
If you constantly wait for something specific, your mind will start to worry when it sees that expectations do not correspond to reality, and this will greatly interfere with the process. For example, you will listen to one of the greatest, according to critics, albums on Earth, which was appreciated by millions of people. But you will notice that you do not feel anything, the music will seem boring to you. You will start to think: “there’s something wrong with me” or “why I can’t get pleasure now.”
Instead, just relax, let the feelings be what they are. And even if you are not experiencing anything, then accept this too. Most likely, not everything comes from the first time. It took me a lot of time to listen to certain albums before they became my favorites. And maybe, really, this music is not for you. I said that taste is nothing more than a habit, but I did not say that you absolutely must like everything.
This approach will teach you to accept your emotions as they are and not to experience frustration due to the fact that your expectations do not coincide with reality.
Rule 3 - do not tag
When you do not get the expected pleasure from the composition, you will start thinking: “I just don’t like this style”, “I don’t like female vocals”, “this music is too heavy / simple / gloomy / boring for me”, “the previous album was nothing and this one is simple. "
Get rid of quick judgments and just listen. I came to the conclusion a long time ago that practically in any music from light jazz to metal there can be its own beauty, only each style expresses it differently. We get used to certain musical genres and do not accept others: we do not listen to hip-hop, because it seems to us that we are simply not able to appreciate a quick recitative. Or we don’t like hard rock, as we don’t like the sound of guitars and all this rock aesthetics with long hair and black costumes.
But do not chop off the shoulder and generalize. Each musical style has its own nuggets, regardless of whether they hold a guitar, a violin, or lock themselves in a studio surrounded by musical equipment. Musical ideas change year after year, new genres appear, and old ones disappear. These things are temporary. Try to see behind these things something eternal and unchanging, that beauty, a sense of harmony and order, which man has already begun to express since the times of wild tribes. Everything changes, but this beauty remains and it exists in many styles of music. Don't live in the same style, listen to different things.
This will teach you to see unity in imaginary opposites and to find the most intimate and eternal under the cover of the transitory.
I would like to add advice to these rules to go to concerts more often, including concerts of classical and jazz music. Choose a day when instead of the usual leisure in the bar you go to a concert. Changing standard habits can be very exciting!
Further only for those who are interested, I will tell you about my favorite music. I do not think that this should be interesting for everyone, so I will say that what I wrote above is a self-contained part of the article and you can finish on it and not read further. But, probably, someone thanks to me will find new interesting performers. And for this, I publish a small overview of music trends and musicians, from jazz to electronics.
What to listen to?
I think for sophisticated music lovers my list will be amateurish and superficial. The way it is. About my musical tastes of the last few years, I can say that I just love good music, regardless of its style. In spite of the fact that I always felt an unusual, strange music, I did not listen to the underground. Also, I seldom dived deep enough into one musical genre and cannot be seen as a deep connoisseur, such as jazz or techno. I just chose good performers from different directions, and, as a rule, they were the most famous representatives of their genre. Because the tactics of searching for "great albums" that I offer you, I have never hesitated to use myself, therefore, the most famous (though not always in the widest circles) performers have mostly come into my field of vision. Let's start my superficial review of world music with jazz.
All albums which I advise will be written out in such order in which I recommend to familiarize with them (from "simple" for perception to more "difficult").
Jazz
Why did I start with jazz? Because, in my opinion, this style is available to people of different ages and tastes. Although, as I said, taste is merely a habit, sometimes this habit is quite strongly rooted in the cultural past of a certain person. And this habit is difficult to overcome. I think my grandfather would find it difficult to find pleasure in listening to the electronic clicks and squeaks of the IDM genre, whereas I wouldn’t bring much pleasure to retro-hits (but I still like some of them). But by some jazzman Miles Davis album, I think we could enjoy together.
So, if you have never understood the pleasure of listening to the improvisation of brass and keyboard instruments superimposed on the confused rhythm of the drum, then it is time to understand!
Herbie hancock
Remarkable and very famous and influential jazz pianist. If you go to whosampled.com (on this site you can see which musical fragments (samples) of some songs were borrowed from others), then you will see that fragments of his classical jazz works were used by a great many modern artists, mainly in genres hip-hop and r'n'b. Herbie Hancock can be said to be one of the most cited hip-hop dzazhovyh performers. Music ranges from memorable and popular tunes to avant-garde. I attended his concert in Moscow, it was a great experience. Hancock professes Buddhism and is engaged in meditation.

John coltrane
I must confess that until now I knew very little about Coltrane. I decided to go to Wikipedia and read a few facts from his biography. And now much more interested in his work.
John Coltrane is one of the greatest jazz musicians. But his uniqueness lies not only in his virtuosity, the brilliant possession of the saxophone, but also in the fact that music has become for him the resultant effect of his spiritual transformation. Coltrane with the help of religion and spiritual practices got rid of heroin and alcohol addiction. And of course, these facts very interested me.
Coltrane adhered to the views peculiar to many representatives of various mystical trends and the new age. He believed that all religions lead to God and did not distinguish between different religious traditions. His reading books were the Koran, the Bhagavad Gita, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the Bible. His albums are called: “OM”, “Meditations”, “Amen”, “Dear Lord”. He believed that every religion contains its own wisdom. In my opinion, the fact that a person begins to see the unity of different traditions, rather than contradiction, suggests that he is at a higher level of spiritual and religious development than those who are tied up in quarrels generated by disputes about whose religion better and which one is more true.
I understand that Coltrane’s personal views do not always interest those who simply want to listen to his music. But I always wondered what kind of person and character are behind a certain work of art. And I see that only good is behind the art of Coltrane.

Miles Davis
Perhaps the most famous representative of jazz music, which appeared after the 60s. He was the inventor of several sub-styles of jazz. Unlike Coltrane, he didn’t have such virtuosity, but his quiet musical sayings were more concise and precise. Also, unlike Coltrane, he never got rid of his addictions, which had a bad effect on his career towards the end of his life. (It would be nice if he practiced meditation, following the example of his colleagues in the workshop of Coltrane and Hancock) However, this did not prevent Davis from writing great music.

- Bitche's Brew (jazz-rock, jazz-fusion, more unusual sound than the above albums, the recording used two bassists, two pianists and two drummers simultaneously)
How to listen to jazz?
Nowadays, dzazh is associated with sophisticated music for sophisticated aesthetes. But, in my opinion, this is just music, the same as the rest. Jazz is like cocaine. While the drug was available to all, it was used by the lower strata of society. And as soon as its value increased, it became the prerogative of the rich. But jazz was also once popular music, and jazz concerts were attended by people from the poorest districts, and not just highly intellectual snobs.
Therefore, when you listen to jazz, do not try to find any "high musical ideas" there, but just listen. This music is just like any other capable of captivating, making the heart beat faster, and nodding its head to the beat, one has only to get used to its changing harmony.
Rock
Rock can be different, as, perhaps, any style of music. Here I will bring two of my favorite rock teams.
King crimson
British progressive rock band formed in the 70s. Throughout their creative work, their music absorbed the influence of various musical styles and added something from them to these styles. Their early works were strongly influenced by jazz, concrete and avant-garde music, and some of their compositions resembled long classical suites. The composition of the group, as well as its sound, was constantly changing throughout the segment of the existence of the collective. The only constant member of the group, the heart of the group's ideology was Robert Fripp. He is the inventor of the original styles of guitar playing and a follower of the Russian mystic and spiritual teacher Georgy Gurdjieff. Музыка King Crimson является довольно технически сложной и виртуозной. Она всегда заигрывала с авангардом и экспериментальной музыкой, но при этом никогда не уходила далеко от понятных многим людям традиций рока.

Все, в хронологическом порядке. Лично мне, в зависимости от жизненного периода, нравились разные альбомы. Лет 5 назад я любил немного пафосные, длительные, мелодичные альбомы раннего периода. Сейчас мне больше по душе более минималистичные и лаконичные работы, относящиеся к более позднему творчеству (например, альбом Discipline).
Tool
Эта современная тяжелая рок группа из США является самой парадоксальной командой из всех, которые я знаю. На одном американском сайте я прочитал: "Если вам нравится Tool, это значит, что либо вы очень умный, либо очень тупой!"
Конечно, это просто гипербола речи, но в ней есть своя правда. Группа является очень популярной. И армию ее поклонников входит и великовозрастные эстеты, находящие в ее текстах отсылки к Юнгу, и подростки пубертатного возраста, любящие коллектив за тяжелое, агрессивное звучание.
Наверное, из числа известных рок-групп только Pink Floyd может похвастаться таким разнообразием поклонников.
Если вы послушаете их агрессивный звук в первый раз, то подумаете, что это очередная альтернативная группа, воспевающая насилие, крутой нрав и секс. Но здесь заключается очередной парадокс. Коллектив в достаточно энергичной манере, активно использую тяжелый гитарный звук, импульсивный вокал и быстрые удары барабана рассказывает о том, как важно жить моментом здесь и сейчас, стремиться к абсолюту, Богу, воспитывать свое Эго (хотя не в каждой песне). Вокалист Джеймс Мейнард Кинан повествует о медитативных духовных переживаниях в своей эксцентрической манере.
Я чувствую, что эта музыка очень близка ко мне по философии и по духу, несмотря на то, что я никогда не был любителем тяжелого звучания. И по мере моего увлечения Tool, я обнаружил еще один парадокс. Энергичные гитары, медленно гипнотизируют, даже успокаивают, вызывая эффект, который обычно производит монотонная и спокойная музыка. Но музыку Tool, сложно назвать спокойной! Возможно, в этом состоит заслуга искусных музыкантов, которые, опираясь на традиции металла создали новое, оригинальное звучание. Это металл с духом эмбиента! Ambient
Осуществить плавный переход от инструментальной, "живой" музыки в область электроники нам поможет плавный и спокойный стиль Ambient. Ambient, если не брать в расчет какой-нибудь дремучий авангард, является, пожалуй, самым скучным стилем музыки. Многие популярные исполнители активно адаптируют звучание этого жанра, включая мелодичные переливы в свои композиции, насыщенные перкуссией и вокалом. Но чистый эмбиент, как правило, не содержит ничего этого. Он текучий и монотонный. Композиции, как правило, длинные и лишенные барабанов и разнообразных эффектов.
Но, если набраться терпения и уделить этой музыке какое-то время, то она отроет для вас свои удивительные сокровища. К тому же Ambient, на мой взгляд, обладает самым значительным терапевтическим эффектом, позволяя расслабиться, достичь состояния сосредоточенности и спокойствия и уловить те оттенки эмоций, которые обычно вам недоступны. Ambient - это почти медитация. Более того, я считаю, что эта музыка доступна практически всем возрастам и культурам.
Brian Eno
Брайн Ино считается одним из изобретателей эмбиента. Но свою музыкальную карьеру он начинал отнюдь не со спокойной музыки. Да того, как он написал первый ambient альбом, он был участником глэм-рок группы Roxy Music (кстати, весьма хорошая группа, советую), одевался в экстравагантный костюм с перьями, в котором выходил на сцену. Также он выпускал сольные альбомы, и принимал участие в совместных работах с другими музыкантами, например с тем же Робертом Фриппом из King Crimson.
Говорят, что идея записать альбом со спокойной, медленной музыкой с повторяющимися отрывками посетила Ино, пока тот лежал в больнице и слушал доносящиеся из окна шумы. И он решил начать делать музыку, которая медленно гипнотизирует, обволакивает слушателя, погружая его в определенную чувственную атмосферу, а не оглушает его стремительными аккордами и новыми звуками.
Ино жил какое-то время в Санкт-Петербурге. Он имел тесные контакты с советской-российской сценой и даже спродюссировал альбом группы Петра Мамонов - Звуки Му.

- Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks (альбом о космических полетах, передающий атмосферу восторга и одиночества человека, который впервые оказался в космосе)
Steve Roach
Еще один известный исполнитель классического эмбиента. Путешествовал по удаленным уголкам Австралии, под впечатлениями от которых записал прекрасный альбом Dreamtime Return. Автор длительных получасовых композиций.

Biosphere
Гейр Йенсен живет в Норвегии, в маленьком городке за полярным кругом. Его музыка - это воплощенная в звуках полярная ночь, чье небо переливается красками северного сияния. Она способна незримо окутать слушателя мягким снегом и северным морозным ветром. Музыка Biosphere демонстрирует способность эбиента погрузить человека в мир, в котором он ни разу не был. Это наверное и есть то, что меломаны называют "атмосферностью". И это свойство присуще в большей степени именно эмбиенту чем какой-нибудь другой музыке. И в особенности музыке Гейра Йенсена. Это, пожалуй, мой любимый музыкант в этом стиле.
Рекомендуемые альбомы: Начните с великолепного альбома Substrata, а затем перейдите к самой первой работе с элементами техно - Microgravity и слушайте все в хронологическом порядке.
Другая электроника (Techno, IDM, Experimental)
В этой части обзора я, пожалуй, напишу о музыке, которая, вероятно, является вызовом для меломанов. Это экспериментальная электронная музыка. Она может быть достаточно сложной для восприятия и, одновременно, прекрасной. Вряд ли ее поймут люди всех возрастов, хотя, я могу в этом ошибаться. Поэтому я пишу о ней в последнюю очередь. Хотя это совсем не андеграунд, а довольно известные в своем жанре музыканты.
Plastikman
Я долгое время считал стиль minimal techno чем-то совсем глупым и примитивным. Не нужно большого ума и таланта, чтобы наложить простую последовательность из нескольких электронных звуков на монотонный бит. Но все не так просто, и музыка Рича Хаутина, который выпускает ее, в том числе, под псевдонимом Plastikman - яркое тому подтверждение.
Его музыка демонстрирует всю разницу между минималистичная музыкой и музыкой простой, примитивной. Минимализм - это сложное, выраженное в простом, многое, выраженное в малом. Красота музыки Plastikman заключается не в сложных мелодиях, разнообразных звуках и динамических прогрессиях. Ее красота не похожа на блеск пышного убранства старинных храмов или на идиллический южный закат. Ее красота - это красота идеально гладкой поверхности черного шара из слоновой кости, красоты геометрии и математического порядка.
Она отличается от многословной, щедрой и несдержанной красоты той музыки, которую мы привыкли слушать. Поэтому она может вызывать сначала такое непонимание. И поэтому я пишу о ней здесь.
Ведь это действительно другая форма музыкального выражения, а не какая-то "недомузыка". И когда я начал ее понимать, я осознал, что требуется очень большое умение и талант, чтобы из нескольких скупых звуков и эффектов построить такую композицию, которая может нравится слушателю! Более того, я стал думать, что имея в арсенале огромное количество форм музыкального выражения и свободу делать музыку какой угодно сложной, удивить слушателя намного легче, чем когда этих средств выражения мало, как в минималистическом искусстве. Все гениальное просто! Все гениальное минимально!
Умение и талант Plastikman заключается в том, что у него нет ничего лишнего композициях, а то что там есть, стоит на своем строго определенном месте. Складывается ощущение, как будто, если что-то поменять, то вся структура быстро разрушится. Музыкант, казалось бы, сумел уловить тот единственный возможный порядок, в котором и может существовать музыка в условиях заданных ограничений. При этом, каждый звук из скупого набора звуков проходит точную и филигранную обработку на специальном оборудовании. И он тоже звучит так как должен звучать и никак по-другому. Когда слушаешь какую-нибудь другую музыку, то наслаждаешься мелодией, сотканной из звуков. Здесь же наслаждаешься самими звуками.
Возможно мне не очень точно удается описать свои впечатления от музыки Plastikman своими словами, поэтому лучше вам ее просто послушать.

Coil
Coil - британский электронный дуэт. Его участники увлекались оккультными и сексуальными практиками, а также наркотиками и всяческим развратом. Они были последователями Макркиза да Сада и Алистера Кроули, поклонниками Пьеро Паоло Пазоллини. Если за музыкой Джона Колтрейна, о котором я писал выше, скрывается много всего хорошего: его религиозный путь и духовное развитие. То за музыкой Coil хорошего стоит меньше: это воплощение декаданса, эстетского распутства, безудержного и не знающего ограничений гедонизма. Тем не менее, мне давно очень нравится творчество этого коллектива. Их музыка обладает способностью вызывать самые разные эмоции из неизведанных уголков подсознательного, и вдобавок, она бывает очень красива, особенно тогда, когда не режет слух. Джон Бэлланс и Питер Кристоферсон за свои не очень длинные жизни успели записать достаточно много материала и весь он очень разнообразный. Музыка порой очень странная, что само по себе не является странным фактом учитывая то, какими были эти ребята.

И еще много других различных релизов среди которых попадаются практически невыносимый нойз и авангард.
Autechre
Еще один британский дуэт, чей музыкальный стиль критики относят к IDM, что расшифровывается как Intelligent Dance Music. На счет intelligent не знаю, но танцевать под ее сбивчивые псевдо-хаотические ритмы очень и очень сложно. Музыка дуэта очень необычна, но и очень талантлива. Как говорил один мой друг, Autechre больше программисты музыки, чем музыканты, и я с ним в этом согласен. В их музыке красота выражается через строгий математический порядок, она как будто парит где-то высоко, отрешенная и лишенная всего человеческого. Кажется, что ее писал робот или инопланетянин. В ней вы не встретите привычных эмоций, если вообще встретите хоть какие-то эмоции. Если ранние альбомы еще содержат какой-то намек на нежность, мелодичность и знакомую гармонию, хоть и отрешенную, странную и нечеловеческую, то более поздние пластинки лишены и этого. Это романтика микросхем, бездушных механизмов, холодного космоса и безжизненных импульсов, бегущих по нейронному волокну электронного мозга.
Это не то, что вы привыкли слушать. Но музыка, конечно же должна быть красивой. А музыка Autechtre очень красива и выполнена, должен сказать, очень профессионально! Даже само название группы Autechre очень красиво, но, в то же время абстрактно. Но ум проводит ассоциации с какими-то технологиями и искусственным интеллектом. Название полностью соответствует музыке. Это один из моих любимых проектов. Даже в поздних, пропитанных хаосом работах прослеживается определенный порядок и замысел создателя. Хотя, на первый взгляд, кажется, что это просто произвольно сгенерированная последовательность семплов.
Рекомендуемые альбомы: все, начиная с первого Incunabula и идти по хронологии, именно в таком порядке возрастает "сложность" музыки. Мне у Autechre нравится практически все, но любимый альбом, все же Amber. Клип ниже не является показательным для того, чтобы продемонстрировать их творчество, просто мне нравится видеоряд. Да и вообще в случае Autechre трудно найти показательный трек, все очень разное. Лучше слушать альбомами.
Boards of Canada
В отличие от всех вышеназванных исполнителей в рубрике экспериментальной электронной музыки, работами шотландского дуэта Boards of Canada сложно кого-то шокировать. Я думаю, даже если вы дадите послушать их своему дедушке, он не будет особо возражать (Но трудно вообразить, что с ним будет если показать ему клип Autechre, который выше). Музыка довольно мягкая и спокойная.
Но, тем не менее, понять эту музыку мне удалось с большим трудом. Мне было очень интересно, за что эту группу так любят, оценивают так высоко их альбомы. Тогда как их музыка казалась мне скучной и унылой. И у меня вновь появилось чувство, что я что-то упускаю, и я стал слушать и пытаться уловить в музыке Boards of Canada то, что сделало их такими популярными в мире практически без всякой раскрутки и рекламы. Мне пришлось прослушать их альбомы по 10 раз, прежде чем мне начала нравится их музыка и очень нравится! (Вот, кстати, в чем еще преимущество рейтингов и критических обзоров. В них можно найти такую музыку, которая достойна того, чтобы попытаться в нее "вникнуть", даже если ты ее пока не понимаешь и не можешь положиться на собственный вкус.) Я вовсе не жалею о потраченном времени, теперь, Boards of Canada - моя самая любимая группа и их альбом Music has the Right to Children (а также другие их работы) я до сих пор могу слушать постоянно. Эта музыка не надоедает. Мне кажется, что, всех кто слушает или когда-то слушал «Досок» можно разделить на два типа. Первые, это кому их музыка совсем не нравится. А вторые - это те кто просто без ума от этой группы!
