How to learn to quickly read: 9 exercises for speed reading

The ability to read quickly makes our life much easier, especially the current one, with its frantic pace. If you can learn to quickly read and memorize what you read, then increase your productivity by several times, and it doesn’t matter what you do. However, before you learn to read quickly, learn one important thing: speed reading is not suitable for smart and thoughtful books: they take time. But for a quick scan of the text needed for work or school, the skill of quick reading is what the doctor ordered. So, we master the best exercises for speed reading.

Sighting

There is nothing terrible, despite the name, in this method. Sighting is the ability in a few seconds to find in the text the most important passages to which you need to pay special attention and weed out the material that you already know. So, to read quickly, you need to select all the necessary information using an instant view.
You need to start learning this skill with training on subjects. Consider the selected item for a few seconds. Now we close our eyes and present it with all the little things. We open our eyes and note the differences between the image of the visual and the real. Select three features that you have not noticed before. Close our eyes again and imagine this object. We do all this up to seven times.

With reading this exercise is performed in the following way:

Quickly review the text (but do not read) for half a minute and highlight the three main thoughts of the passage. We close our eyes and present these thoughts.
We repeat four times and try to find all new thoughts and moments, while visualizing them.
Find keywords
In order not only to read quickly, but also to memorize everything I read, you need to be able to find keywords in the text, that is, read through the word. We determine the subject of the text before reading and run through his eyes, while we catch only those phrases and words that are relevant to the subject.
Suppress articulation
And you know that we ourselves slow down the reading, as the text is pronounced to ourselves and even articulate mentally. It turns out that without this you can read and get much faster. What exercises are needed for this?
  • First of all, during the reading try to count mentally;
  • While reading, beat off the rhythmic pattern familiar to you with your fingers. For example, the precise rhythm of the song "We will rock you!"
.
Learning to use visual memory
There is another factor hindering fast reading: this is the usual spelling from the lower grades. Today, even when teaching first-graders of graves, teachers depart from reading by letter: children are taught to perceive and memorize whole syllables or even small words. In adults, memory is more developed, so try to grasp words consisting of a dozen letters at once. To do this, do some exercises every day.
On the plates we print long words that are most often found in texts (for example, in professional literature that you have to read).
You can create these signs using computer programs. The table may have two or three words or more.
Look at the plate, but do not read the word. Close your eyes (or remove the picture from the monitor) and say what was written on it.
Start with those words in which from 6-7 letters and complicate the task gradually. Give this exercise about 10 minutes minimum. Practice vertical reading.
It is quite possible to read vertically. This means that you can teach your eyes to embrace a whole line with one glance, and not move along it. For this purpose, the system of Schulke exercises has been created.
It uses lined square tables. They contain numbers in random order. For a start, tables with 16 digits are used, then with 25, 36 and 49. The arrangement of numbers in all tables should be different. Well, if you prepare them will not you, but someone else. It will also be nice if you do this exercise together and change your own signs. Your task is to look at one point in the center of the table and at the same time see the whole page, without focusing on trifles.

Other exercises

Very well, if you do them together. So it is easier and more interesting.
  • We mix up the letters. If you do not know yet, then the brain perceives the dictionary reading much better than the literal reading. And this means that the letters in a word can stand in absolutely any order, and the most important thing is that the last and first letters are in their places. So, while working with a partner, we prepare each other texts with letters mixed up in internal words and change them. We check each other's reading.
  • Cross out the letters. Also a pair exercise. We take the text and cross out certain letters, for example, all vowels or all voiced consonants. You can read for speed by checking the reading technique with a partner with a stopwatch.
  • We read through the word. This exercise is suitable for those who are obsessed with every word. First we prepare the material, namely the text, where every third word is erased. Then you can erase every second word. Your task, like the partner’s task, is not only to read the text but to understand its content as accurately as possible.
  • Assault vehicles. We also work with a partner. Just take excerpts from a single work and read for a while, after which we retell for a while. We read this in turn.

And one moment. It is better to train in reading for those books that you are more or less interested in. Just read and have fun.
